The unsettled winger will stay after a heart-to-heart with
Arsene Wenger. But he could go in January if contract talks
are not resolved in the next four months.
Gunners chief Wenger reminded ambitious Walcott he
is a major figure in his plans.
He said the player’s interests were best served by staying
put rather than seeking a move to the uncertainty of
Manchester City’s big superstar squad.
However, it has only been agreed that Walcott, 23,
will not be sold during this transfer window.
That gives Arsenal those four months to persuade him that
his long-term future lies at the club.
Gunners insiders say the discussions were ‘extremely positive’
and are hopeful Walcott will sign a new contract in the coming weeks.
But he wants £100,000 a week while Arsenal have only offered £75,000.
Liverpool are also keen but boss Brendan Rodgers
knows he has to offload striker Andy Carroll before
making any bid for £15m-rated Walcott.
The Kop have made a formal enquiry while City are yet to
show their hand officially over Walcott.
