ENGLAND made a carnival start to their World Cup
campaign last night as they set off on the long road to Brazil.
Frank Lampard stunned Moldova with an early double before
Jermain Defoe, James Milner and Leighton Baines completed
the rout with the only worry an injury to John Terry.
Boss Roy Hodgson said: “I’m very pleased, it’s a great result
because the first match in a qualifying group is a nervous occasion.
“You are always concerned you will not produce the performance
you want, or the result, but we got off to the best possible start,
controlled the game throughout and the scoreline flattered us.
“Sometimes 5-0 victories do — but not today. Now we have a
couple of days to prepare for the next one.
“Tuesday is against Ukraine, who could be one of the favourites
to win the group. I hope the recovery time is sufficient and the
players can muster their strength again to give a good performance.”
